SMOK has been on a roll lately. Fresh off the success of the Alien, X Cube, and even their TFV line of tanks, it seems most anything SMOK pushes out becomes a hit. This time around, the company presents a powerful box mod made out of wood – the SMOK Treebox Plus 220w. Not many box mods come in a wooden body with the exception of the outrageously expensive stab wood variety. Having had a chance to use this device for a solid few weeks I’m going to explain the things I like and dislike about it. Continue below… PACKAGING & DESIGN Coming in a standard box with the image of the mod on the front, with some information at the back, the first thing you'll notice when you open the box is how gorgeous the Treebox is. The mod is a bit larger than the SMOK Alien, though it still feels great in the hand. What sets the Treebox apart from other mods is the body itself. Made out of 100% Brazilian Rosewood, the mod really does look fantastic. The body has nine layers of Amber Paint for protection, and despite the wood, it feels light in the hand. Everything is well-made. It feels solid and looks every bit a premium device. There are two variants available: black and silver. Black looks stealthy while the silver one looks classy. Take your pick. At any rate, for the price, you get loads of value for your money. Capable of delivering up to 220 watts of power, it has both beauty AND brains. This dual-18650 mod can handle resistances from 0.06 ohms in temperature mode (0.1 ohms in wattage mode) up to 3 ohms. The voltage range on the hand is from 0.8 volts to 8 volts, while the temperature range in TC mode is from 200 to 600 Fahrenheit. Coils supported are Nickel, Titanium, and Stainless Steel. To further maximise your vaping pleasure, the Treebox also offers manual TCR (Temperature Coefficient of Resistance) so you can fine-tune your vape. So far, it looks like the chip in Treebox is accurate and stable. One negative though is that you can't adjust wattage while in temperature control mode. A little annoying as it’s a feature I like to use. The button layout of the Treebox is pretty standard fare, with a fire button, an OLED screen, and two adjustment buttons. There is also a USB socket for updating the firmware, which is a nice touch. To turn the device on you simply click the fire button five times. However, turning it off can be quite painstaking. Clicking the fire button another five times simply locks it and doesn't shut it down. If you want to shut the Treebox off, you need to go into the menu, find the power symbol, and select it to turn it off. Alternatively, you can hold the fire button for about 5 seconds and turn it off while the device is locked. The second process is easier, but it’s still longer than the usual 5-button press to switch off – I'd love to know why SMOK decided to complicate such a simple function here.... DISPLAY The Treebox's display is pretty much a standard affair, though you can adjust the contrast to help conserve some battery. It displays the battery level, a puff counter, the current resistance, the voltage, the power/temperature, and the drawing effect. The screen is bright and readable in most lighting conditions, and it is slightly recessed to protect it if you drop it. Do keep in mind, though, that if you do drop it, the wood will more than likely receive some damage. BATTERY DETAILS The mod is powered by two 18650 batteries (not included), which makes sense especially if you plan to vape the full 220 watts. If you tend to vape at around 30-40 watts, you can expect your battery life to easily last a day or two. The battery bay is easily accessible, and the door can be removed with ease. However, putting it back on can be frustrating sometimes, similar to the H-Priv. It’s not a deal breaker, but it’s a basic function that shouldn’t be as difficult as it is to. DISLIKES Power off can be timely and at first quite confusing - Five clicks to turn on, but to turn off is a lengthy process. Could have been made more intuitive Can't adjust wattage in TC - To adjust wattage, you'd have to make do with TCR Battery door access - Easy to open, sometimes a pain to close Easily marks - Being made of wood, when dropped, you can easily scuff the finish LIKES Looks great - The wood grain is fantastic and everything looks classy Firmware upgrades - The ability to update your mod is always welcome Dual 18650's Can adjust vape strength - Using the TCR, you can custom fit your vape according to taste Resistance range - With a max 0.1 ohm resistance in wattage mode and 0.06 ohms in temperature control, you can fire most any coil you throw at it Stealth mode - You can turn off the screen to go stealth Adjustable screen brightness - You can further improve battery life by adjusting the screen contrast and brightness Great price for such a quality dual18650 mod - Especially on gearbest where you can snag it for less than £40 (but you'll have to wait 2-3 weeks) Build quality - Topnotch quality. Solid and doesn't rattle. Feels like a premium device SHOULD YOU GET THE TREEBOX PLUS? SMOK has done it again with the Treebox Plus 220w Box Mod. Combining beauty and brains at an affordable price is rare these days, but SMOK has pulled it off. The Treebox is far from perfect, but for the price, you are getting you're money's worth (and more). Truly, a real value mod if ever there was one - power and beauty for less. I could only find this available from Gearbest, a company based in China. I have bought from them several times now and I've never had any problems. In fact, their customer service is one of the best I've experienced online. Do keep in mind that if you order you will likely have to wait up to 4 weeks (double check their site for more accurate delivery times). For the low prices they charge, I find it's often worth the wait.
