The Solo Mini by IJoy may be small in stature, but it is big in performance. It’s not perfect, but I can almost guarantee you’ll get a kick out of it. Let’s take a closer look at what it offers. PACKAGING & DESIGN The Solo Mini doesn’t have the most creative packaging, so don’t expect much here. The sleeve and box don’t give any clue as to the specifications of the device. In fact, all you really get is an image of the unit, a list of available colors, with your selection checked off. Oh, and a little logo advertising “Taste Control,” which is something I’ll tell you more about a little later in the review. Inside the box, the set-up is as you would expect. The Solo Mini is packaged on top, and all the accessories in the kit are packed underneath – pretty standard stuff. You’ll find all the basics like a USB charger, a silicon sleeve, and the instruction manual. What you won’t find is batteries or tank, so keep that in mind when you are pricing things out. The Solo Mini is perfectly sized to fit in your hand. It’s small, lightweight and has a durable and high quality feel to it. The fire button located at the top of the unit and at the bottom of the device you’ll find the remainder of the controls set out in a T-shape set up. You have your up and down controls forming the top of the T, and the temperature and taste control button below that. All the buttons are easily accessible, and they make a nice clicking noise to let you know that your selections are being registered. This little unit is great if you like using different tanks and coils. It will recognize and accept just about any material – stainless steel, nickel, titanium, etc. – that you care to throw at it. There is a spring loaded 510 connector on top that I found to be very responsive. Another thing I noticed is that when you first attach an atomizer, the unit will automatically set the wattage to 15W. Pressing the up and down buttons takes you in either direction in units of 0.1 per click, or you can speed through the settings by holding the button down. What is this new Taste Control feature? The Taste Control will actually monitor your vaping session and makes you aware of when your coil goes dry. This helps to reduce the chances of you getting a dry hit - pretty smart. To access Taste Control you press the button at the bottom of the “T”. I found the taste control mode to be more effective with a dripper as opposed to using a normal tank. Mainly because you’re more likely to be vaping at higher temperatures while using a dripper as opposed to a normal tank. OLED DISPLAY I have mixed feelings about the display. iJoy have crammed a lot of information on the screen, which has it's pros and cons. Sure, it means you have access to more info, which most of us want, but some elements are too small to easily read. I found things like the Atomizer Resistance, Voltage, and Current, which sit right atop the battery indicator, much more difficult to read. It's fair to say that these aren't overly important to know, but if you're going to have them there, please make them easier to see! The good news is that all the vital information you need is clear and easy to see. BATTERY DETAILS The iJoy takes an 18650 battery, which isn’t included when you buy this device. Access to the battery compartment is easy, as the cover is held in place magnetically, making it easy to get off and on. This is often an area that is overlooked by manufacturer’s, so it’s nice to see that IJoy have taken the time to remove what could easily be a frustrating task. The IJoy Solo Mini is a good choice if you’re looking for a box mod that isn’t as hefty as some of the other units on the market. The pros do outweigh the cons, and I have to say that if this came as a legitimate starter kit with the battery and an IJoy Reaper tank, you’d be looking at one of the best buys in its price range. Unfortunately it doesn’t, and you’ll have to add the cost of a battery and tank, but all in all you’re getting a good mod at a pretty good price.
