SMOK OSUB Kit Review

Smok Osub

While the trend in vaping seems to be heading towards larger box mods that churn out a ton of power, not everyone needs upwards of 200 watts to get their vape on.

If you find yourself in that category looking for a device that may not be the most powerful on the market to get the job done then you might want to consider the Smok Osub 40W kit.

This is a device that is smaller than what you may be used to if you have been carrying around a bigger box mod, but it’s an efficient little unit that has surprised me with its efficiency.

Let’s take a closer look…

PACKAGING & DESIGN

The packaging for the Smok Osub kit is quite smart.

The cover that slides over the box features an image of the device on the front, and also lists what’s included with the kit, as well as authenticity codes.

Sliding the cover off reveals the Smok logo in etched silver on a black box.

Upon opening, you’ll find the main part of the device on top, with the other elements of the kit – Helmet mini tank, USB charging cable, etc. – tucked in below.

The Osub measures 25mm x 30mm x 70mm, so it’s a small device that fits snugly in any sized hand.

Even with the tank attached via the 510 connector, this is a vapourizer that is incredibly easy to carry around.

You can get the Osub in several different colors, but I went with the stainless steel version, and, I have to say, I really like the color.

If you want something other than the steel, you can choose from red, white, and a couple of different black versions.

FUNCTIONALITY

One of the main features of the Smok Osub that may well prove to be hit or miss with you is the fire bar.

Located on the side of the unit, you can fire it up with a squeeze of the palm.

While this makes the device incredibly easy to fire up, it also can lead to the power being switched on when you don’t really want it to be.

The good news is that you can lock it with 5 quick clicks, so be sure to get in the habit of doing that when you know you won’t be using it for a while to avoid making this mistake.

Getting into the menu is quite easy.

You simply click the fire button 3 times. It’s in here where you can navigate between temperature control and wattage mode.

There are two buttons on the side of the device that allow you to toggle the settings up and down. As the name of the unit suggests, the max wattage output is 40W.

While his may seem like a device made solely for newbies, it has a few features that more experienced vapers will like.

For instance, there’s a sub-menu that allows you to change the wattage and resistance for TC coils, which essentially allows you to subtly fine tune your settings.

One thing I found slightly annoying is that I had to go into the menu and change the settings whenever I added a different coil.

I wouldn’t say it’s a deal breaker, but it would be much easier if it had the same feature most other MODs have whereby they simply ask you if the atomizer is new once it’s been attached.

OSUB DISPLAY

The display is quite small, which really shouldn’t come as much of a surprise given the size of the Osub.

That said, it’s easy to read, and features all the important details that you’d expect.

One nice little feature is the ability to change the display to either a vertical or horizontal readout.

You can also go into the menu and view more info like your puff count.

WHAT BATTERY DOES THE RABOX OSUB TAKE?

The Smok Osub is powered by a 1350 mAh battery, which isn’t enough for a full day’s use if you use it regularly – it wasn’t for me anyway.

You’ll get a mini USB charger to charge it, and it doesn’t take too long to charge.

Strangely enough the charging port is hidden under a faceplate where the fire button is located, and you’d do well to find this without checking the manual.

You’ll need to remove that cover to get to the charging port, which I found a little frustrating to get to.

TANK DETAILS

The Helmet Mini Tank is a really nice little unit, and the flavor that is delivered via the coil isn’t too bad either.

The Osub kit comes complete with colored O rings that Smok say can improve the flavor and the airflow when placed over the coil.

Personally I didn’t notice any difference in either the flavor or airflow when the ring was in place. To control the airflow just twist it at the top.

DISLIKES

  • Need to remove the faceplate for charging
  • Maximum output of 40W may not be enough for everyone
  • Battery life isn’t great

LIKES

  • Excellent price
  • Very compact and portable
  • Easy to control
  • Menu is easy to navigate
  • Can be locked to prevent accidental power up

SHOULD YOU GET THE OSUB?

This is a well-designed box MOD that is highly portable, affordable, and it offers enough features to make it attractive to new and experienced vapers.

There are a couple of things that I don’t like about it, but I wouldn’t say they’re enough to make it a bad buy.

This is a decent little device if you’re looking for something highly portable, especially if need a back-up around the house or when you’re out and about, and offered at a pretty decent price.
